Project Description: VCS844 | REDD, Peru
Located 28 km from the new sealed road between Brazil and Peruvian ports, the project protects 98,900 ha.
It is in the Vilcabamba-Amboró Conservation Corridor in the Peruvian Amazon, one of the world biodiversity hotspots.
The new road is generating a series of environmental and social impacts made possible by improved road conditions.
The area faces an increased risk of illegal logging, gold mining or new settlers undertaking subsistence agriculture and grazing.
The project covers two Forest Stewardship Council certified timber concessions.
Almost 1 million tCO2e is not released into the atmosphere from the forest’s carbon store each year.
Sustainability Beyond Carbon
There is more to offsets than just carbon.
Each VCS carbon credit is a tonne of verified climate benefit, no matter the type of project.
This carbon offset project provides multiple sustainability co-benefits beyond just carbon and helps link your climate response to improved sustainability.
It provides a buffer for indigenous populations choosing to remain in voluntary isolation within the Madre de Dios Territorial Reserve.
The project finances activities including forest surveillance (in-field patrolling and satellite monitoring) and community technical assistance.
It increases local employment opportunities and provides improved education and training for children and young people.
The project conserves vital habitat while supporting the livelihood of indigenous communities.
The forest provides habitat for 4 endangered rainforest tree species and 11 endangered wildlife species.
These include cedar, mahogany, jaguar, red howler monkey, giant anteater and armadillo, lowland tapir and red-and-green and scarlet macaws.
One survey within the project area identified 37 mammal and 172 bird species.
Regionally, over 160 mammal, 324 bird, 106 reptile and 123 amphibian species exist, plus many species of invertebrates.
These project’s actions help reduce the area’s vulnerability to external factors of deforestation and degradation.
Analysis concluded that obtaining revenue for the rainforest’s environmental services was the only way to preserve these areas.
Carbon finance contributes to sustainable development for rural producers and at least 5 indigenous tribes living in the buffer area.
It would be too expensive to undertake without the supplemental revenue source that comes from the project’s carbon credits.
