Description

VCS1742 | RoR Hydro, India is a renewables (electricity) Verified Carbon Standard project providing access to electricity and its benefits.

Project Description: VCS1742 | RoR Hydro, India

This project is a run-of-river (RoR) hydro-electricity project on the Sutlej River.

It consists of 4 X 250 MW generation units which provide approximately 4000 GWh annually.

It’s electricity generation is available 90% of the time and it provides 1000 MW of peaking power throughout the year.

The grid is experiencing rapid energy demand growth and energy shortages are significant.

It alleviates the grid’s acute shortage of electricity generation capacity, especially during system peak load.

Existing demand is met primarily through fossil fuels (almost 60% of capacity) and nuclear power plants.

It’s renewable electricity displaces energy from existing generators and the grid’s emissions intensity is 0.8031 tCO2e/ MWh.

Sustainability Beyond Carbon

There is more to offsets than just carbon.

Each VCS carbon credit is a tonne of verified climate benefit, no matter the type of project.

This carbon offset project provides multiple sustainability co-benefits beyond just carbon and helps link your climate response to improved sustainability.

The project provided medium term employment opportunities for the local people during the construction phase.

Operation and maintenance requirements provide employment opportunities for local people during the project’s life.

The project helped construct a 10+2 grade school, an industrial training institute and a 40 bed hospital.

It upgraded existing roads and bridges in the hilly terrain, improving the villages’ social and economic interactions.

It helps bridge the supply/ demand gap by supplying sustained and quality power supplies to the grid.

The grid’s acute shortage of electrical power stunts the economic growth of the region.

The project has enhanced business opportunities for local stakeholders e.g. suppliers, manufacturers, contractors, consultants.

The economic benefits for the region will continue over the project’s life-time.

It displaces fossil fuel generation, helps reduce GHG emissions and avoids other pollutants like SO2, NOx and particulates.

The project doesn’t generate any solid wastes like fly ash or any type of nuclear-contaminated wastes.

It comprehensive catchment area treatment plan includes plantation establishment, check wall construction and pasture improvement.
