Description

VCS173 | RoR Hydro, India is a renewables (electricity) Verified Carbon Standard project providing access to electricity and its benefits.

Project Description: VCS173 | RoR Hydro, India

This run-of-river (RoR) hydro-electricity project has no storage dam.

It has consists of 4 x 100 MW Pelton turbines in an underground power station.

Upstream of the turbines there is a diversion barrage across the Alaknanda River and an 11.3 km head race tunnel.

After generating renewable electricity, the water re-enters the river via a 1.9 km tail race tunnel.

Power generation depends on current stream flows due to lack of a dam controlling water flows.

The project supplies around 3,850,000 MWh annually to the INDIAN Power Grid.

The project’s renewable electricity displaces electricity with an emissions intensity of 0.9450 tCO2/MWh.

Sustainability Beyond Carbon

There is more to offsets than just carbon.

Each VCS carbon credit is a tonne of verified climate benefit, no matter the type of project.

This carbon offset project provides multiple sustainability co-benefits beyond just carbon and helps link your climate response to improved sustainability.

The project generates employment opportunities during the construction and operation phases.

It has led to regional infrastructure development e.g. roads.

It helps reduce the region’s demand/ supply gap and helps improve electricity reliability and quality.

This improved power supply helps support business activities and to region’s economy.

This clean technology investment would not have taken place in the absence of carbon finance.

It reduces the exploitation and depletion of non-renewable energy resources and improves energy security.

Renewable energy reduces GHG emissions as well as SOx, NOx and particulates, helping improve air quality.

The project’s operation promotes hydro-electricity based power generation and encourages other similar projects.

Stakeholder meetings to identify the major challenges around the area are organized on regular intervals.
