VCS1477 | REDD+, Indonesia is a forest (nature-based) Verified Carbon Standard project protecting biodiversity and supporting local communities.

Project Description: VCS1477 | REDD+, Indonesia

Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan) encompasses approximately 5.7 million ha of peatland.

Industrial plantations on this peatland contribute about 20% of Indonesia’s total emissions.

The Project Area (PA) is 149,800 ha located entirely within a state-designated production forest.

Above-ground biomass (14.25 Mt) and the peat (546.75 Mt) within the PA hold vast amounts of carbon.

The project is protecting ecosystems within one of Indonesia’s largest remaining intact peat swamp forests.

The project is reforesting 4,433 ha of non-forest areas within the project area.

The baseline scenario is conversion of the peatland into fast-growing industrial pulpwood plantations.

Sustainability Beyond Carbon

There is more to offsets than just carbon.

Each VCS carbon credit is a tonne of verified climate benefit, no matter the type of project.

This carbon offset project provides multiple sustainability co-benefits beyond just carbon and helps link your climate response to improved sustainability.

The project has obtained full legal control of the production forest area through an Ecosystem Restoration Concession license.

This enables the project to block applications from plantation companies.

The protected area is vital in stabilizing water flows, preventing devastating peat fires, enriching soil nutrients and providing clean water.

The PA is rich in biodiversity with large populations of some of the world’s most endangered species.

The forest habitat supports 2 critically endangered, 11 endangered and 31 vulnerable species.

Overall, the project area’s biodiversity includes 157 bird, 67 mammal, 41 reptile, 8 amphibian, 111 fish, and 314 floral species.

It is home to an estimated ~4,000 Orangutan, almost 10,000 Bornean Gibbon and over 500 Proboscis Monkey.

These three populations all represent over 5% of the remaining global population of each of these species.

The PA has no permanent settlements though it supports surrounding villages’ traditional livelihoods including farming, fishing and non-timber forest products.
