VCS1382 | REDD+, Brazil is a forest (nature-based) Verified Carbon Standard project protecting biodiversity and supporting local communities.
Project Description: VCS1382 | REDD+, Brazil
The project seeks to prevent frontier deforestation in primary tropical rainforest.
A total area of 200,000 ha is conserved though the project activities only focus on 39,300 ha of this.
This smaller area is the forest originally slated for conversion to grazing land prior to the project.
JR Agropecuária e Empreendimentos EIRELI, (JRA) owns and manages the land.
Before the project, they originally planned to log 20% of the property prior to converting the land to pasture.
Feijó is located on Highway BR-364 which is the main east-west highway in Acre and recently upgraded.
This greatly increased the region’s market access and property values due to cattle ranching expansion along this road corridor.
Evidence suggests that landowners with market access (i.e., access to major roads) have deforested at least 20% of their properties.
JRA has agreed to forego the planned conversion, to provide benefits to local communities and to monitor the forest and wildlife.
They have undertaken a forest carbon inventory, developed a regional land-use and deforestation model and an ongoing monitoring plan.
They are working with the local community to address the underlying drivers of frontier deforestation.
Sustainability Beyond Carbon
There is more to offsets than just carbon.
Each VCS carbon credit is a tonne of verified climate benefit, no matter the type of project.
This carbon offset project provides multiple sustainability co-benefits beyond just carbon and helps link your climate response to improved sustainability.
JRA grants land title to community members who cleared land in the project zone and have worked it for more than 10 years.
This provides an incentive remain rather than moving further into the forest.
They have initiated regular patrols every 60 days that check for deforestation along the rivers within the property.
Processes are in place to counteract the deforestation and it’s impacts.
JRA provides a local health and dental clinic.
The project is helping develop alternative economic activities, e.g. the commercial collection of medicinal plants and acai.
They provide agricultural extension courses, e.g. alternatives to using fire in land preparation, improved pasture management, rotational cattle pastures.
The Envira-Jurupari-Purus River basins have demonstrated some of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world.
There are 23 Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered species in the surrounding ecosystems.
These include spider monkey, tamarin, marmoset, woolly monkey, giant anteater, giant armadillo, mahogany and cedar.
