Project Description: GS7606 | Solar Cookers, China

The majority of Zhenping’s rural households use coal-fired stoves for water boiling and cooking.

The project involves distributing 50,000 free parabolic-type solar thermal cookers to eligible rural households in Zhenping.

The domestically produced solar cookers use parabolic reflectors to gather direct solar radiation for cooking.

The cookers typically have the cooker body, pot and cooker racks, and the tracking and adjusting mechanism.

Each cooker’s rated output is 894.6 W (thermal) and the project’s total installed capacity is 44.73 MWth.

Low to mid-level income households with >2 members and using coal as their main energy source are eligible to participate.

The solar cooker’s unique serial number in linked to the household’s information.

Another household in the same village will have the solar cooker redistributed and re-registered to them if participation ceases.

Sustainability Beyond Carbon

Reducing coal use lowers the amount of smoke generated within the home, resulting in better indoor air quality and improved respiratory health.

Solar energy is renewable, clean and free so the project ensures access to affordable energy.

The project has provided training, created 15 local jobs and offers an alternative, additional income to workers outside of traditional agricultural or heavy manual labour.

It stimulates solar thermal energy’s development and creates more technology and knowledge-based employment with good working conditions.
