Project Description: GS2664 | Household Biogas, China

The project replaces old coal fired stoves with biogas sourced from the household and its animals’ waste using a biodigester.

15,555 homes installed household-scale bio-gas systems using organic matter (manures and wastes) as the feedstock.

The biodigester anaerobically breaks down the wastes in an 8 m3 fixed dome tank.

Bacteria that thrive in an oxygen deprived environment produce biological methane.

The house uses the captured and piped biogas to replace coal as a cooking fuel.

The system meets the household’s cooking heat needs as each bio-gas stove has a rated power of 2.33 kW.

Changing manure management practices and the capture and use of the generated biogas reduces uncontrolled methane emissions.

The project reduces emissions by over 53,000 tCO2e each year.

Sustainability Beyond Carbon
