In 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted, and is to be implemented by all Member States of the United Nations
It states in its preamble:
“eradicating poverty, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development”
“bold and transformative steps….are urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path”
The 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and their 169 targets are stimulating action in areas of critical importance for the planet and humanity
- seek to realize the human rights of all
- achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls
- are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental
The SDGs “recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.“
