Verified Carbon Standard (VCS)

Technology Type

Run of River Hydro-electric (1000 MW)

Project Location

The project is located on the stretch of Satluj River between Karcham and Wangtoo, Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, India

Project Description

Prior to the start of the project activity the existing demand in the Northern Region Grid was met primarily through fossil fuel (almost 60% of capacity) and nuclear power plants

The NEWNE regional grid has an emissions intensity of 0.8031 tCO2e/ MWh

The project consists of 4 X 250 MW hydro-electricity generation units utilising a run of river configuration

A concrete gravity diversion dam diverts water to the underground power house complex at Wangtoo, after which it is discharges back into the Sutlej river

The Sutlej River has been identified as an important source of hydropower for Himachal Pradesh.  It rises in the Tibetan Plateau, passes through the Himalayan Mountains and foothills and meets the Arabian Sea across the plains of Northern India and Pakistan

The project was devised to alleviate the acute shortage of electricity generation capacity in the Northern Region of India, especially at the time of system peak load

The grid supplied by the project has been experiencing rapid growth in energy demand and energy shortages are significant

The project provides over around 4,000,000 MWh annually, being available 90% of the time and providing 1,000 MW of peaking power throughout the year

Its operation avoids the need to construct either a coal, gas or oil fired thermal power plant of similar capacity

The project provided medium term employment opportunities for the local people during construction phase. Operation and maintenance requirements provide employment opportunities for local people during the life of the project.

The project supports the northern regional grid in supplying sustained and quality power supplies for the local community.

The project has been involved in the construction of a 10+2 grade school, an industrial training institute, a 40 bed hospital, as well upgrading existing roads and bridges in the hilly terrain, providing improvement in the social life of the surrounding villages.

The northern grid’s acute shortage of electrical power stunts the economic growth of the region; the project helps to bridge the gap between supply and demand.

The project has enhanced business opportunities for local stakeholders such as consultants, suppliers, manufacturers, contractors etc.

The economic benefits for the region will continue over the project’s life-time.

By utilising a renewable resource the project displaces fossil fuel generation, helps reduce GHG and other pollutant emissions, and avoids the issue of solid waste disposal encountered by most other sources of power.

A comprehensive catchment area treatment plan has been formulated by the project comprising of plantation establishment, construction of check walls, pasture improvement etc.
